Adidas Predator is a range of football boots developed by German sportswear manufacturers Adidas based on a prototype concept from the Australian former footballer Craig Johnston. The common feature of the Predator range is the presence of rubber patches or strips on the top of the shoe, designed to increase friction between the boot and the ball. In late 2010, Adidas designed the new "Power-spine" technology, which they claim improves shot power by reducing the amount the foot bends back as it kicks the ball.

It's hard to believe that it is almost 15 years since the arrival of the original Adidas Predator Football Boot, which has gone on to become the boot of choice for such top athletes as David Beckham, Steven Gerrard and Jonny Wilkinson.

The first version of the Predator was designed by ex-Liverpool striker Craig Johnson, and was created to increase the contact between football and boot on impact, to provide greater ball control. His change to the boot's outstep also allowed players to add spin and after touch. Adidas Predator Football boots were heavily marketed, and celebrity endorsements throughout the 1994 FIFA World Cup ensured that the boots received the attention they deserved. The Rapier came out the following year, and was the only of Adidas' Predators to be released outside of a World Cup or European Championship.

It is not only the distinctive style of the Adidas Predator's that has garnered them so much attention, but also the technical innovations in boot technology. The Adidas Predator Touch (released immediately prior to Euro 1996) was the first boot, for example, to have moulded studs rather than the traditional detachable studs, something that has since become an option for most football boots. The Predator Precision took the idea of different studs further by providing removable Traxion studs, with each designed for a different pitch condition.

The Adidas Predator Mania, released in 2002, although discontinued, is widely regarded as being the best football boot ever made and second hand boots can sell for well over £100. Produced with both XT RX moulded blades, and traditional screw-in studs, the Predator Mania introduced Predator's HG or Hard Ground sole for improved reliability on synthetic surfaces.

Since 2006, Adidas has also expanded its Predator range to cover rugby as well as football boots, and continue to be the mainstay of the top players within both sports.
